As ever, the global superstar's signature urban style runs throughout, touching on tough florals, cool sweaters, street-style bomber jackets, luxe leather and slick double-breasted blazers, and we want EVERY piece. WAREHOUSE Talent Spot Presents: The Haunting by Anna Ackred

Warehouse’s Talent Spot platform discovers and supports emerging creative talent, and this season, the high-street brand sought to find an artist to collaborate with. And, the prize? Something every budding artist or designer would dream of: a showcase of the winner’s work in the flagship store and online… 

Artist Anna Ackred was an extremely deserving winner and impressed not just Warehouse, but a prestigious panel of industry experts with her delicate, innovative paper art. By reinterpreting Warehouse’s key trends via the unusual medium of paper sculpture, Ackred displays (just in time for Halloween) a beautifully surreal window display for the flagship store on Argyll Street. As the brand talks to the artist herself, Ackred says of her ethereal installation, The Haunting, that ‘it supports the Warehouse collection by asking the audience to view the garments in a different way: encouraging them to engage with the ideas behind a fashion collection and look at fashion as an art form.’ And, as a sneak preview, Warehouse interviews the mind behind the creation, before we get a proper ogle at the finished effect itself…

Did you always know you wanted to be an artist?
‘I’ve always been a really creative person so winning the Talent Spot competition has been a fantastic opportunity for me to develop this further.’

Why paper?
‘I studied a fashion design course at Central Saint Martin’s and there I studied paper artists Andy Singleton and Richard Sweeney who explore natural forms through paper sculpture. I wanted to develop upon that idea, exploring fashion design through paper sculpture. It’s a really accessible medium and allows you to create elaborate and intricate sculptural forms in a way you can’t achieve with textiles.’

Do you think fashion and art are intertwined?
‘I think fashion is an art form. To create garments which are both beautiful to look at and functional as clothing is such a skill - fashion is about creating beauty in the everyday.’

What was the concept for your window installation?
‘I looked at the key trends for the AW13 Warehouse collection and wanted to elaborate further upon the ideas behind the collection by looking outside of fashion for inspiration.The trends I examined were lace and embellishment, twists in fabric and geometric shapes.’

Describe your dream Halloween costume.
‘It would be a cross between Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride and Morticia Addam’s iconic hourglass, fishtail dress; something ethereal and beautiful but gothic and haunting at the same time.’

What are you going to be doing this Halloween?
‘I’m going on a London ghost walk!’

Primark's AW13 Collection STORMED the high street this season. With the brand's BANG-on-trend pieces (including everything from luxe tartan knits, to heavily chained biker boots, a Givenchy-esque knit (which I'm totally head-over-heels for) and glittering accessories and rocks) there's no doubt the high street is calling. And the prices? Why, they're more than affordable! Which is a relief to our ears (and our bank balances, no?)

THE INDUSTRY: Donna Ida interviews Simeon Farrar

It was another highly packed event at the Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design on the 23rd October, as the industry’s most notable professionals met at the Institution for another exclusive event organised by The Industry. The likes of Courtney Blackman (MD of The Industry), celebrity stylist Rebekah Roy, jewellery designer Sarah Angold and Fashionising’s editor-in-chief, Tania Braukämper were in attendance and made for quiet the audience. After staging David Gandy in July with Hilary Alexander posing the questions, next up on the club’s enviable calendar was the founder of Black Score, Simeon Fararr, interviewed by the one and only Donna Ida Thornton (a long-standing member of The Industry herself).  The jean queen (who owns a retail mecca of denim boutiques) grilled Fararr on his outlandish London Fashion Week stunts, ducking lawsuits against Dior and Chanel, and causing, what one can only describe as, CHAOS with model of the moment and partner in crime, Cara Delevingne. 

The artist-cum-designer revealed that ‘for a brand to get anywhere you have to take some risks.’ Black Score burst onto the fashion radar when he staged an impromptu and unauthorised catwalk through the courtyard of Somerset House. ‘I’ve been kicked out of Somerset House three times,’ Simeon admitted. ‘However, the press we got from the first London Fashion Week Black Score stunt was more than we’d get if we had a stand.’ Being chucked out of Somerset House has, although, been the least of Simeon’s worries over the years. He revealed that his ‘Totes jel of my Chanel’ and ‘Dior is Dope’ t-shirts resulted in various legal repercussions, product recalls and settlement sums. But, to Simeon, breaking the rules is all part of his winning formula when it comes to creating a brand. Referring to himself as a ‘spanner in the works’, the artist-cum-designer explains that ‘as an artist, seasons were quite hard to come to terms with at first,’ and, by working to a six week lead-time, ‘it allows me to react to certain things, a lot of companies can’t react to things quickly ‘ as ‘in six months the moment has passed.’ 

Notably, however, it is the endorsement from the world’s top supermodels that has really pushed Black Score on to the scene. And, of course, Donna Ida asked the million-dollar question: how did Simeon win the heart of Cara Delevingne? Simeon confessed that, ‘as with anything, it didn’t start with any kind of plan – total fluke!’, going on to say, ‘we went around London Fashion Week and took pictures of people in the t-shirts. Cara and Jourdan were coming out of the Topshop Unique show surrounded by paps. I didn’t even know who they were, but I got someone to give them a t-shirt and got snaps – that’s how we met.’ And, in true Black Score style, the designer also dismissed the traditional methods of professional correspondence and instead totally embraces the power of social media. ‘We kept in touch through Twitter,’ the designer adds, and, the rest is HISTORY.

ASOS MAGAZINE: the December 2013 issue

The latest issue of ASOS Magazine (which if you don’t already read – needs to be quickly added to the top of your to-do list) has just dropped and features the lovely Aluna Francis of the band, Aluna George. Francis stylishly works ASOS’s Party Type Embellished Ovoid Dress and ASOS S O Earrings on the cover, and effortlessly teams the garments with her own personal style and cool attitude to life. 

On her stage outfits:
“I’m good with a bra top…my stage looks are a carefully crafted thing. I sweat like a beast from head-to-toe when I’m performing, so I have this criteria that my clothes need to cover. I need something that is barely covering my body, but is covering it enough that it can be called an outfit. And it has to be shorts, not a skirt, because I don’t want to show my pants.”

On her style:
“I like to mix masculine and feminine – I think I’ve got quite a floaty body, so I like something that offsets that. I got inspired by 1950s boxing attire, which kind of works because performing is like a sport for me.”

On Aluna George’s fans:
“We had a hypey kind of support early on…But now those people are still following us, and that’s really humbling. We didn’t want to be a flash in the pan – get huge success and not deliver. The past year has given us confidence in people’s tastes in strange, eclectic pop music.”

On her relationship with fellow band member George Reid:
“We genuinely like each other, and that’s not always how it works…we’re so different but I think that’s good, because we’re always bringing something different into the studio.”
